We live in a world inundated with commercialism, consumerism, and division through race, class and gender. Our work as writers and educators is to elucidate some of the problems we face, and begin to formulate solutions: how can we work alongside one another to create a more meaningful, authentic and connected sort of existence? This occurs when each of us is able to honestly explore ourselves, our culture and our underlying ideas. When we communicate about these things with one another, we open possibilities in which growth and change can occur, both on the personal and social levels. |

"I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It's when you're licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what. You rarely win, but sometimes you do." --Atticus Finch, from Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird |
